Winter Meeting Opens PANGOLIN’S STEEPLE Flat Race to Orby’s Choice. . (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) ; Napier, June 23. The winter meeting of the Napier I’ark Lacing Club opened to-day in fine but rather windy weather. The attendance was well up to the corresponding day last year, the difference in the gates being only a few shillings. , ' ‘ The steeplechase events were contested by poor fields, and it would have been better for the club to have run only one event of this description.. The Napier Steeplechase -was won by Pangolin, and the open flat ruce by Orby’s Choice. Even with poor' wagering on the steeplechases, the totalisator investments were £5098/10/-, only £336/10/- less .than bn the corresponding day last year, , The track was in .first-class order. : As a mark of respect for the late Mr. W. G. Stead, .the jockeys in the third race, the Meeanee Hack Handicap, wore black arm-bands. - : / .’ , .-A ’■■ ."'■■■ ~J , , •: J■ ■ : '<■/ _.‘.S -, , ■ ,•:!'< ■■■■■■, ..i 1 ! ■ Jayson Improves., . . 1 • .L„ Manuiri and'Kaiti, favourites in the Moteo Hack ran fair races, and were handy enough in the running to have done better had they been good enough. King Wanga set a fast pace from Jayson, who on the turn was clear of the bunch, headed by Manuiri, Clopton, Kaiti, Laokoon, and High Heather. Jayson took on King Wanga six / furlongs from home, and after staying a couple of furlong!. with him went out by himself. From that stage on Jayson had only to stand up to win. Clopton coming along in the straight to take a comfortable second from King Wanga. High Heather was fourth, followed by Manuiri and Kinsel. The winner, who started hurdling at Otaki, where he jumped atrociously, showed great improvement in that department, and was always going well.. Nothing had any chance with him over the concluding

stages. Clopton is another improver. Had he got away well he may have won. Neither first or second horse was well backed, and both paid good prices. Won by a Furlong. Hard Gold’s opponents were not seriously backed to get him in the hack steeples. Gaswyn led him for a round, and then lost his rider, giving Hard Gold a substantial lead. Ho negotiated the remaining obstacles safely, and ran in n winner by a furlone. Harrowgate comfortably beating Beau Regal. It was easy money for Hard Gold. Favourite Easily. Sabatini made the pace, in the hack sprint, and was joined on the turn by the favourite Megaphone fjgm Kinross, Megaphone made his run in the straight, and won comfortably from Sabatini, who beat Kinross just as easily. Forest Stag was fourth, followed by Golden Pennant and Thermopylae. . . ■ ' Megaphone, improved by his race at Hastings, outclas:«d the opposition, although he still ran greenly. Sabatini ran to form, and was the only one to make him gallop. Forest Stag, lost valuable ground at the start. ' - '’■ ' The Steeplechase Race. The field in the Napier Steeples went to the post without Monetize, who ■ had injured himself, and so was only of one dividend. ■ ' . Pangolin , and Bon, Aryan see-sawed in the lead from Airtight : and . Princess Elizabeth. . Bon Aryan lost his rider commencing the last round, leaving Pangolin in front. Airtight chased him for the rest of the journey, but Pangolin was too good for him. They had drawn well clear of Princess Elizabeth at the finish. Kowhatu ran off. ; -J Pangolin gave a good exhibition of jumping, and had too much pace'for Airtight, ’ who ran much straighter at his fences to-day. .... Big Maiden Field. The big field in the maiden race put a premium on post positions and good beginnings. In this respect Grumpy was unlucky, drawing No. 18 and being slow away. Margaret Rose jumped away best, and was soon joined by Jean Ladoiso. At the end of two furlongs Grumpy had joined them. Margaret Rose, Jean Ladosio and Grumpy led ‘into the straight from Outspan, Miss Beatrice and Bothwell. Grumpy soon settled the leaders, ’and drew clear,., but Bothwell. finished with a sustained run, and got up in the_ last stride. Margaret Rose was a fair _unrd, with Hawora fourth, then Jean Ladiosio, Menaderan and Outspan. . Bothwell won well, and has improved, but Grumpy showed the best speed,, and was unlucky. Margaret Rose had every chance. ’ Hawora came from a long‘way, back; there was some money for her. The winner was second favourite, but so solid was the backing for Margaret Rose that he paid a good price. ' d/ - Desperate Finish. The open mile, after a good start, in which Teller and Imperial Fame got off very badly, saw a desperate finish. Moa Bird got out best with Atholspcar, but Manifesto settled down as pacemaker from Atholspcar, Statuary, Moa Bird, J uggle, Orby’s Choice and Rory Mor. Manifesto and Statuary led round the turn clear of Atholspcar, Moa Bird, Juggle and Orby’s Choice. Manifesto and Statuary began to fight out the issue wheu in line, but Juggle came at them; then' Orby’s Choice swept up with a run on the outer. At tbe post heads only separated Orby’s Choice, Juggle, Manifesto and Statuary, with Moa Bird, Atholspcar and Imperial Fame right up. ' Orby’s Choice is a recent recruit from the hack ranks. He won'nicely with a well-sustained run, and was the. best, horse on- tbe day. The favourite, Statuary, had every chance, as did all those who were prominent in the running. At the same, time ./Manifesto and Statuary tended to beat each other. A Big Surprise, Vi taphone sprung it big surprise in the concluding hack event, but his win was no fluke, and with Keesing up many who were aware of his ability profited by the change of riders. . ..Willowmere made the early running, with Monarchy, Captain Dab, Vitaphone, Court Lady and Beacon Fire prominent. Vitaphone went to the front at the halfmile, and led Monarchy, Willowmere, Captain Dau, Court Lady and Anemometer. Monarchy , soon disappeared, .and Beacon Fire was the next to drift. Vitaphone led into the straight, where Anemometer challenged. ■ Vitaphone. ridden out, won well, with Anemometer clear of Captain Dan, who was only inches ahead of Air Laddie. Henry of Navarre was close up. • • ' ■ Vitaphone, who has been hopelessly placcdicarly in his recent races, was always well placed to-day, and gave Mr. Kcmball a well-merited win and a double figure dividend. Anemometer ran a good race, and so did Captain Dan and Air Laddie. Beacon Fire, a hot favourite, Was never too well placet!, and on the turn he was back in the rear with Monarchy, who bled just when he was looking dangerous.
