The Belgian steel, four-masted barque L’Avernir (training ship), 2078 tons register, built by Rickmers, Akt, Ges, Bremenhaven in 1908, and owned by the Association Maritime Beige (Soc. Anon.), Antwerp, lias been sold to Captain Erikson, Mariehamn, Finland, for a little under £3OOO, and will be fitted for the carriage of passengers. The L’Avenir wits recently offered to English buyers for a training ship, but evidently the buyers did not think she was a paying proposition, and so the sale lapsed. The L’Avenir is well known in South Australia and Victoria, where she at different periods loaded full cargoes of wheat. BERMUDA SOLD. NEW INTERNATIONAL SIGNALS British Edition Published The British edition of the new international code of signals which it is intended shall be brought into force on January 1, 1934, has been published. The British edition will be followed in due course by the issue of six other standard editions of the code in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, and Spanish. Pending the coming into international operation of the new codes, it is hoped that masters and officers of British ships will take such opportunities as occur of familiarising themselves with the new code and its procedure. A notice to mariners will be issued later suggesting that the code should be practised between British ships as from January 1, 1933, and indicating the procedure to be adopted by ships desiring to communicate in the new code. Later, when the various foreign editions are available, opportunities will occur for using the code between British ships and ships of other nationalities. The new code, while mainly for the use of ships, provides also a considerable number of signals suitable for the use of aircraft. It consists of two volumes, Vol. I for visual and sound signalling, and VoL II for radio signalling. The new visual code makes use of twenty-six alphabetical flags, ten numeral flags, and three flags known as “substitutes,” in place of the twenty-six alphabetical flags of the existing code. It thus enables numbers to be signalled directly. Further, by means of the "substitutes,” signals can be made in which there are repeated letters or numbers. Such signals cannot, as a rule, be made by the present code unless a ship has two or more complete sets of the existing signalling flags. In the new code, new square flags have been introduced for the letters C, D, E, F, and G; and. the pendants (or pennants), which in the existing code represent these letters, are used to denote the numerals 1 to 5 respectively, new pennants having been introduced to denote the remaining numerals 0 and 6 to 9. Certain alterations in the meanings of the single-letter signals have been made in the new code, and the two-letter signals have been completely revised, though .certain important two-letter signals such as NC, JD. and PT, retain their old and well-established meanings. The threeletter signals have been completely revised and brought up to date. The geographical section has been entirely rewritten. Vol. II (for radio signalling) is the first official international wireless telegraphy code issued specially, for the use of the' merchant and air services. It contains full instructions for use, including advice as to the best methods of compiling code messages so as to avoid difficulties of translation, a table for correcting corrupt groups, a general vocabulary, and a geographical section. An interesting feature of this volume, is the casestating system embodied in the medical section. The object of this system is to enable ships which do not carry a doctor to send code messages to other ships or coast stations asking for medical advice or assistance. The system is quite complete in itself, and is so arranged that, when all the editions of the code are in operation, it will enable communications regarding medical matters to be made between ships of different nationalities, thus avoiding difficulties of language. The code may be purchased at mercantile marine offices in the Dominion, after about October 31, 1932. Gellatly has joined the Kaitoa as second mate. Captain P. R. Vaughan, D.S.C., is now in command of the White Star motorliner Britannic, relieving Captain F. F. Summers, who has been appointed to the new motor-liner Georgia. Captain Vaughan, who is well-known in New Zealand, was born in 1876, and at the age of 16 was apprenticed to Messrs. Staveley, Taylor and Co., and joined their barque Craigmullen, and completed three years service in the ship. He also served in the same firm's clipper ship Edderside, and later obtained his master’s certificate while serving in the barque Ballumbie. In 1901 he joined the White Star Line as fourth officer, and three years later was appointed second officer of the lonic. In May, 1930, while serving as chief officer of the Athenic, Captain Vaughan was presented with a pair of binoculars by the American Government for bravery in rescuing the passengers and crew of the steamer Munamar. During the war, he was in the mine-sweeping service, and had command of some of the fast minesweepers. In 1916 he received the D.S.C. from the King at Buckingham Palace. During the week ended April 29, 844 vessels, representing 779,287 net register tons, used the Port of London; 416 vessels (612,938 net register tons) were to and from colonial and foreign ports, and 428 si vessels (166,349 net register tons) were engaged in coastwise traffic. Altogether 239,000 carcases of lambs and mutton, 76,000 quarters of "beef, quantities of pork and rabbits, and approximately 23.000 packages of sundries were distributed to the London market and throughout the country, or placed into cold storage.
