EARTHQUAKE SEQUEL
Napier Alignment Powers READJUSTMENT SURVEYS Alignment regulations for the borough of Napier were gazetted last evening and come into force to-day. These have been made necessary as a result of the moving and disturbance of landmarks during the Hawke’s Bay earthquake. It is provided that the Napier Borough Council shall erect, subject to the approval of the chief surveyor, a number of standard monuments, each of which will, consist of a stone or concrete block with an iron tube as a centre mark. From these standard lines are to be surveyed. When it becomes necessary for the alignment of a street to be established surveys can be prepared from the standard lines, and it is specified that boundaries before and after the earthquake are to be shown on “redefinition plans.” The council is given power to select alignments which conserve the rights of the public, and, at the same time, do not entail hardship to property owners ,'
It is further provided that, in the event of disputes, the council may apply to the Hawke’s Bay Adjustment Court for an order determining the alignment of any street.
