Retired Naval Petty Officer By Telegraph--Press Association. Whaiigarei. June 15. Michael Hayes, about 63. a retired petty officer of the Navy, was found dead in his cottage at Kaitaia, where he was a well-known figure. His throat was cut. ami it is believed the wound was self-inflicted. There was evidence also tier lie had struck him self on the head with a hammer and stabbed himself in the chest with a slasher. The cottage door was securely locked. Deceased was of independent means. A number of medals, including the D.C.M., were found tn the house.
