JOBS FOR EX-SOLDIERS
Only 55 Under 1930 Act Regret that negotiations with the Government regarding the operation of the Discharged Soldiers’ Civil Re-estab-lishment Act had not progressed as well as had been hoped for was expressed at the annual meeting of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association held last evening. In reviewing the position the president,- Lt.-Colonel 11. E. Avery said that the Act, which had been passed in 11)30, was recognised as a stop-gap until such time as the Government could give full effect, to the findings of the Returned Soldiers’ Rehabilitation Commission. A. year ago the Government had approached the Canteen Trust Funds Board on the question of finance, with the result that the board had voted £2OOO and had guarantee! another £3OOO. The money had been paid over, but very little else had happened. Only about 50 or 55 permanent posi Hons had been found throughout Now Zealand, but this had not been the fault of the employment officers. At present, as a result of efforts by the N.Z. R.S.A., an art union was being raised to assist the Government in putting the Act into operation.
