The following resolution was carried at the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council: “That in the opinion of the Eketahuna County Council, as representatives of the ratepayers, the time has long passed for the department to make a substantial reduction in the rentals of party and rural telephones, in face of the fact that numerous disconnections have taken place, ■ and the position will rapidly become worse if immediate relief is not given to retain the present subscribers.” The chairman, Mr. J. B. Carruthers, said he believed he was safe in saying that within the last six months fully 10 per cent of the district subscribers had gone off. Councillor L. Houlbrooke: In my district fully 20 per cent have disconnected. The Chairman: And this is only the beginning of things. It is the considered opinion of many that the department will dally with the matter till most of the telephones go out—then it will be an ■ impossibility to get them back again. The resolution carried by the council is to be forwarded to the PostmasterGeneral, the Secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department, and the member for the district
