MOASCAR CUP
Te Ante Defeat Palmerston North Palmerston North, June 15. The annual Moasear Cup Rugby match between Te Aute College (holders) and the Palmerston North Boys’ High School was decided at the Showgrounds this afternoon, Te Aute winning by 13 points to and retaining the trophy after a game in which the visitors fully merited their success. An erratic wind made accurate passing movements difficult, and the efforts of both teams were handicapped in this respect. The High School forwards were better in the loose, giving the backs numerous opportunities, but good tackling prevented High School from scoring, its three (joints coming from a penalty goal. Enjoying the advantage of superior weight, Te Aute was too enterprising for the home team, and, the score might easily have been bigger had it not been for the tendency of the visitors to infringe the rules. ■ The teams wereTe Aute: Newton, Pile, Burn, Goldsmith, Merritt, Tonga, Pene, Waititi, Utiku, Emery, Rang:, Parker, Tibbie (captain), Crawford, I’aerata. High School: Miller, Gardner, Wareham, Ongley, Hatch, Fletcher, Missen, Spencer, Crawford (captain), Hubbard, Campbell, Lewin. Moffatt, Wilso.i, Arnott. Te Aute kicked off against the wind, a penalty goal soon- after the start resulting in Hatch finding touch near Te Aute goal-line. High School was willing enough te open up the game, but Te Ante backs played up close and prevented any dangerous practices. A dazzling run by Goldsmith threatened High School’s line, a forward pass to his supports halting play right under the goalposts, Arnott clearing. A passing bout was in progress when Ongley failed to hold his pass and Pile, picking up the ball, carried play to the opposite end of the field before being halted. High School escaping with a force-down. Te Auto at this stage was getting the bettor of the exchanges, but was too prone to infringe <the rules, and High School was awarded numerous penalties. Pino and Paerata went away together in High School’s twenty-five, the latter being recalled for accepting a forward pass. Campbell came away from the ruck with the ball at his toes. Newton failing to stop the rush, which swept play to Te Ante's quarter-line before the defence found relief. High School was making every endeavour to throw the ball about. The Te Aute backs, however. wore too attentive, their tackling being very efficient. A determined passing rush in which all the Te Ante backs handled to Goldsmith spelt danger for High School until Wareham nnd Miller brought him to earth in the nick >f time. Pone ran between Missen and Hatch from a serum and kicked over Miller’s head for Tibble tn boat. Miller to the force-down. Merritt’s kick struck an upright and went over. To Aute 13. High School 3. There was no further score. Mr. D. Higgle, a member of the original New Zealand Army team Hint won the Moasear Cup. was referee.
