NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW

Opened at Palmerston North INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITS FEATURED Championships, Awards and Comments Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, June 15. The untiring efforts of the Association’s executive and the Palmerston North Citizens’ Show committee, were reflected tie record number of entries in the various competitive classes and tl<niaximum amount of commercial exhibits at the Manawatu and Wc. t Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s thirtieth annual >ationa Dairy Show, which was opened at Palmerston North to-day under ideal weather conditions. The various stock classes were well supported, while competition in the butter, cheese, field roots, gram produce, home industries and other sections was exceptionally keen, several of the Judges commenting upon the high standard of the numerous exhibits lhe association’s commodious exhibition halls were completely idled with stalls that depicted the various phases of industry, both primary and secondary, while a large number of amusement) booths is ready to cater for the entertainment of the association's patrons.

Under the auspices of the Manawatu Arts Society an exhibition of oils, etchings, and pastels is being staged in the Entertainmetn .Hall, there being over 500 exhibits on view. The majority of these works of art are on loan from the McKelvie collection from the Auckland Art Gallery and a number

of Agriculture has Offieial t s ha oAhe be dqpartme°n't Vre® in attendance at the stall, giving information to farmers and others interested. Another attractive exhibit is staged b V wool .research section ot the Massey Agricultural College, depicting the acti vities of the college research officers, and some of the college professors; arc giving daily lectures .upon the differeiit nhases of the investigations that have EUrr conducted during the past yan The exhibit is of particular interest to sheep farmers, many of whom al ® in"- themselves of the opportunity , to increase' their knowledge with a to improving their stock and raisin„ .the general standard of the wool anil Ca The C ’main attraction to-day was the annual Moasear Cup match between Tl Ante College (holders and Palmerston North Boys’ High School the game drawing an excellent attendance. The North Island Show Ring. A dog trial championship was commenced during the day. but the greatest activity was in the adjudication ot tie numerous exhibits entered for competitl<lii the evening the eliminating rounds of the West Coast, tug-of-war championship were held, for which event over 40 teams have entered. Different breed societies held then annual conferences and meetings during the day. : , ... T , i To-morrow morning the North isianii show ring dog trial championship will be continued, and a wood-chopping competition that has attracted excellent entries will be held in the afternoon. Judges’ Comments FIELD ROOTS. Mr. T. Webb, the field roots judge, expressed his surprise at the excellence ot the exhibits in his classes. Contrary to his expectations, the dry season did not have an adverse effect, upon the quality and size of the roots. Entries were good in every class, and the school section was quite as good, on the whole, as the classes for experienced growers. PHOTOGRAPHY. “The photography section attracted good entries,” stated Mr. M. L. Lampe. •'Both numerically and in quality, the exhibits are up to standard, some being outstanding. The prize-winners in the open classes showed good taste in the handling of diffusion.” ' k _ FARM PRODUCTS. Mr. A. C. Buist, of Feilding, judge of the farm 'products classes, said the chaff he hade judged had been of excellent quality and had excited keeu competition. ‘ The drop in entries in the hay section was no doubt accounted for by the unfavourable weather experienced earlier in the season, when the pastures had been eaten off instead of being shut up for hay. The winning exhibits in clover and meadow hay were of excellent merit, and the same applied to the lucerne hay. In the ensilage class entries had been disappointing, particularly in view of the increasing use of this fodder, but probably, said Mr. Buist, the same reasons applied to this as to the hay. Regarding the wheat exhibited. he said it compared more than favourably with the best Canterbury and Otago wheats. Other grains had not. been so well represented, but what were shown were of good quality. The perennial

ryegrass section had made for good competition, and the seed had been of good quality all round, speaking well, the judge said, ’for the productive qualities of this district for this particular and important seed.
