Official Returns for Month of May DROPS ON LAST YEAR Official Wireless. Rugby, June 18. The returns of Britain’s overseas trade in May show that the value of imports was £55,735,344, as compared with £53,487,187 in the previous month and £69,628,484 in May of last year. Exports during the month were valued at £34,595,524, against £39,423,098 in the previous month and £39,642,284 in May of last year. The value of manufactured articles exported declined by £3,593,844, as compared with May, 1931. This figure Included a drop of £3,269,087 in the value of exports of vehicles, including locomotives and ships, machinery, and iron and steel manufactures. There was an increase of £947,360 in the value of cotton yarns and manufactures exported.
According to a cable message, compared with the corresponding period of last year, British trade figures for May show that imports decreased by £13,893,000, exports by £3,698,000, and re-exports by £1,348,000. The principal decreases were: Imports Meat, £1,574,000; other food and drink, £2,987,000; oil seeds, £736,000; iron and steel and manufactures thereof, £876,000; non-ferrous metals, £864,000; cotton yarns and manufactures, £561,000; woollen ditto, £869,000; apparel, £1,027,000; leather, £582,000. Exports—Vehicles, £2,559,000. The increases were: Imports—Grain and flour. £951,000; raw cotton, £481,000. Exports—Cotton yarns and manufactures, £947,000.
