WORK AT COLLEGES

Cessation of Relief NO MONEY FOR INSURANCE “For months past we have endeavoured to obtain sufficient money to pay the insurance premium, but as all efforts in this direction have failed, the board has no option but to close the works,” said Mr. G. Mitchell, chairman of the Wellington College Board of Governors at a special meeting of the board yesterday, when it was decided to close down the reHef works at the college on Saturday next. “The reduced allowances now made are sufficient only for running the colleges on a most economical basis, and leave no possible margin for buying tools, materials, or pay insurance,” continued Mr. Mitchell. “I need not say how much my board regrets having to take this step. The college grounds have provided work for a large number of deserving men, and have been improved out of all recognition. There is still much desirable work to do, but we have not the money to pay insurances. I wish to express my personal appreciation to the men for the work they have done, and especially to thank them for their loyalty during the recent trouble, and to express a hope that they are all speedily absorbed on other jobs.”
