With the defeat of Upper Hutt on Saturday, the senior B championship is in a very interesting stage, three teams being equal in the lead with the fourth only two points behind. The table made up to and including last Saturday's results is

TOA BEAT UPPER HUTT. Maoris’ Spoiling Tactics Win Day . The star attraction was that between Upper Hutt and Toa, senior B teams, played at Tanera Crescent in which the Maori team administered to Upper Hutt their first defeat of the season. The large crowd that attended were treated to a great contest which almost eclipsed the best in the senior A grade. Toa’s bustling tactics coupled with their hard hitting and quick folio-wing up had Hutt completely baffled in the first spell, and ultimately won the match for them. From the bully-off Hutt attacked but Miss P. Wi Neera cleared to the line. The throw-in gained no ground, but after a fair amount of even play Miss K. Parata, Toa centre half, let her forwards away and Miss E. Te Hiko, left wing, sent in a dazzling shot from just inside the left side of the circle, which Miss E. Simpson found it impossible to clear. Hutt were failing badly in their tackling and the Maoris’ spoiling tactics were proving effective. Miss G. Marshall, Upper Hutt centre half, worked hard to set her forwards on the attack but all her efforts went for naught. A clean break through the defence saw Miss Te Hiko rob herself of a great scoring opportunity by lifting the ball over the net. This was shortly followed up by Miss H. Wi Neera, inside right, sending in an angle shot which beat the Upper Hutt goalie. There was no further score up to half-time, Toa leading by 2 goals to nil. A great improvement by Upper Hutt characterised the opening of the second session. Full of determination the forwards combined nicely, and for ten mjniites had the Maoris bewildered. Eluding the halves Miss I. Shiel tricked her way to the circle and without hesitation let drive, Mrs. S. Parker making a valiant but ineffective effort to clear. Upper Hutt kept up the pressure and with an open goal the inside left skied the ball over the net. Bad judgment in the circle lost Upper Hutt two more great chances. They were really unlucky not to draw level. Mrs. Parker was playing a wonderful game in goal. A beautiful breakaway by Miss Parata. who had played a sound game all through, saw Miss Te Hiko follow up the shot fast and with a clear goal in front of her she had little difficulty in finding the net. It was her smart following up that won her that goal. The Maoris were having the best of matters now, but the sound defence of the Hutt backs, Miss N. Brown in particular, kept them at bay. Toa were playing up to their best form and although at times unnecessary obstruction was indulged in they had the measure of their hitherto unbeaten opponents and won on their_ merits. A hard and fast game concluded in Toa winning by 3 goals to 1. Mr. A. Roxburgh was referee. OTHER CONTESTS. Senior A Grade. The Training College-Swifts game provided patches of good hockey, though tor the most part reliance .was placed on hard hitting. The students made occasional use of good short passing tactics, and were unlucky not to score early m the game. Miss M. McColl opened Training College s account from a long solo run, the only score in the first spell. Early Hi the second half the same player again scored from a corner hit. Swifts played much better in this spell. Miss G. YVebb opening their account. This was shortly followed up by Miss M. VS ilkins equalising From a runaway forward movement Miss McColl placed Training College in the lead, the students eventually winning by 3 goals to 2. , The. game between College Old Girls and Karori was a poor exhibition and much below standard. Old Girls practically dominated play throughout and won by 6 goals, scored by Misses S. Swinburne 3. H. McLellan 2, and P. Hilkie, to nil. Old Girls led by 4—o at half-time and took things easily in the second spell. Although Huia put up a gallant effort they found Hutt a practically 2 goals better team. Hutt led by 1 0 at halftime. Miss E. McClelland made several good efforts to draw Hum level but she did not receive the necessary support trom her sister forwards. Toward the closing stages of the match Hutt netted again, winning by 2 goals to nil. Miss Dot Foreman, Hutt centre forward, scored both goals. Mr. W. Keys was referee. Ramblers and Wenerei provided a scrappy display, some of the players indulging in too much talking and failin» to settle down to the business of the game. It proved a very uninteresting contest, and concluded in a draw of 2 goals each. Miss N. Williams scoring both Ramblers goals. . Senior B Contests.
