If Germany Crashes

"Without any doubt, far too much money has been lent to Germany in the past, mainly because of the high interest which was paid on it. ’ writes Mr. Vernon Bartlett, the authority on foreign affairs, in the Daily Herald. “At the present moment, two Committees of Experts arc discussing what is to happen to these private debts, and to the reparations which Germany is supposed to pay when President Hoover's moratorium comes to an end next July. “It may be true that we have lent money to develop German industries instead of our own. to make model cities of places like Frankfurt instead of clearing our own slums, but it. is also true that Germany will crash if we withdraw our credits which arc due for payment in February. “Germany will not crash if Dr. Bruening can remain in power with help from abroad. “She will not crash even if. perhaps under pressure from President Hindenburg. the Government is extended so as to include Herr Hitler. But no people can live without: hope, and much of the energy in the ‘Nazi’ and Communist movements is the energy of despair.

;’But if she does crash, then there will follow the collapse of several other countries in Central Europe. Once the rot begins, no man living can tell where it will end.”
