THE RACING WORLD

GRAND JURY’S CUP

Mastei’ton First Day

FAVOURITES FAIL Sprint to Imperial Fame (By Telegraph—From "The Watcher.") Masterton. April 15. The autumn meeting of tfie Masterton Racing Club opened to-day in line but cold and bleak weather. The track was in good order, and the attendance for an off day satisfactory. In a good race for the Masterton Cup, which carried, in addition to the stake, a valuable gold cup trophy, the Fcildiug-trained Grand Jury scored a handsome win. He has beeni a consistent performer for the past coupte of seasons, and has always run his best races for his jockej’ of to-day L. G. Morris. Morris incidentally scored his second win in the event, haying won.in I'JIS on Battle Song. On that occasion ho rode 6.12, while to-day, at 8.9 he had to declare his lowest weight B.IUJ. After the race the gold cup was presented to the winning owner, Mr, D. Lourie, by the president,. Mr. G. 11. Vai lilllL't?. The Flying Haudicaji, a . live-horse race, was won by Imperial Fame. Favourites did not have a good day. and the totalisator returns were i-HUt 10/-, compared with £6OOO on the corresponding day last year. A Good Performance. Clangor, a warm favourite for the maiden event, had. every chance. He lay in behind the leaders. Cbatterou and Actelict, to the straight. and taking charge over the last furlong, looked the •winner. Over the last stages, however. Thorn proof aud Gay Song, both of whom had been bandy, collected him without effort aud going on, Gay Song got up to head oil Thornproof. Clangor was a moderate third, with Acrehet tourth. then Sailing, Traymelu, Keue Belle. aud I, The ll 'start was delayed by fractious horses for a quarter of an hour. Mnistie. Bad eventually got awuy behind tlu field, and took no part m the runuin,,, while I’opette also failed to go away on terms. Gay Sing's Performance was a good one, and he gave M. B. Shand his first winning ride. W. Stone nearly man. aged another win first up with his putchase, Thornproof, who has improved. Traymela got off poorly, showed speed i in the early stages, but did not flatter nt the straight. Capetown Wins Decisively. Mr. Kcmball's hick was maintained by Capetown in the hack mile when he downed the favourites, Joie de \ al and Lyrical. There were only four runnel's and Capetown made all the running. In the straight Lyrical and Joie de val j went after him. but be held them off without any difficulty. In a close fnusa for second Lyrical just held ofl. Joie de Val and Kalmuk. , Capetown hud the advantage of a ulb allowance, but he won very decisively. Lyrical ran better than at Easter, but she,had every chance. A sounder pace amiy have seen Joie de Val harder to Highweight Handicap. Full Mark, favourite for the five-horse highweight. took the lead from Black 1 Mint five furlongs from home, but was unable to withstand a challenge in the straight from Balloon, whose run was | nicely timed by Bowden. Black Mint / was n poor third, with Miss Hastings { fourth. , ’ Grand Jury's Win. Gibraltar, the favourite for the Cup, was never a possibility. On the other hand his bracketed mate Easter .Lime made all the running and was not disposed of until the final stages, national If was with Easter Time early, and then dropped in behind Shrewd, joining Easter Timo in the lead, the pacemakers being followed by Gibraltar. Constant Sun,

! Arikira, Jayson, Statuary and Grund Jury. Arikira lost his place five furlongs from home and went right back. Easter Time and Shrewd were still going well entering the straight from Pewa, Rational, Statuary, Constant bun and Grand Jury. The two leaders held their own until the last furlong, where Grand Jury enme solidly to cut them down and win handsomely. Shrewd just held on to beat Easter Time with Rational II a close fourth and Pewa almost in line. Then came Jayson, Statuary and Gibraltar, with Arikira 13 Grand Jury won decisively at the finish, and was well handled by L. G. Morris. Shrewd was paying a long price to win, and was always there. Easter Time ran a fine race, and so did Rational 11. Arikira was well placed and going well until he got crowded back, and that finished his prospects. Gibraltar and Grand Jury were together with seven furlongs to go, but he was never travelling smoothly.

Hack Handicap. Gold Sand .won the hack seven furlong event fairly comfortably, though Flower pressed her home. Trader Horn ana Kotahi Eka led Gold Sand, to the straight. Gold Sand had the race won a furlong off the post. Flower made her stretch out over the last bit, but Gold band was never in danger. Grnn Chaco was a moderate third, with. fourth, then Park Acre and Kotahi B«a. Morris rode the winner very cony Favourite Well Beaten. Orapai, in the Flying Handicap, was the sixth favourite on end to go down, being* decisively defeated by Imperial Fame. They finished well clear of the others. Atholspear being a poor third. Orapai appeared to stumble entering the straight, which may have affected h s chance. Historic never looked like getting up. but be ran a fair race. Alpinist Wins on Post. Alpinist was responsible for a good performance in the voucludmg e . Orby's Choice and Araios set a J ast ’ ,a ° from Lady Ronald and Alpinist. Body Ronald bad charge half-way up <- straight, but Alpinist, sticking well to her task, just got up to win on the post. Orbv's Choice was a poorthird witn False Seoul: fourth, then .Lavora an P The'winner has greatly improved, and her performance was solid. Jia-ee Advice raced well at Addington, but tjie improving Satin King will no doubt, be supported to beat her. Carmel ran well in the sprint on the last day at Addington, and the big course at Ashburton should suit. him. Jewel Pointer and ■Wrackler arc good horses, but nevertheless they do not make a strong appeal. Harold Logan showed all his old 'brilliiuice at Addington, but. he may find the task of conceding Satin King ami Carmcjl to much ground just a little beyond lipin.
