No Holiday for Stewards AWARD INTERPRETATION Interpretations of the New Zealand marine cooks and stewards’ award were given by his Honour Mr. «. ustice Frazer, in the Arbitration Court yesterday. The court was asked as to whether stewards retained on board in port on Anniversary Day for the purpose of serving and clearing up meals are entitled to overtime payment for the time so worked, and whether stewards (other than those, required for the serving and clearing up of meals) employed on the ship sailing from port on Anniversary'Day, some of who:, were ordered back for gangway duty two hours before the.hqnr fixed for sailing, arid others for tfie receiving of passengers’ luggage one hour before the hour fixed for sailing, are entitled.to overtime payment for the time so worked. in his judgment Mr. .Justice Frazer said that the stewards retained on board for serving and clearing up meals were not entitled to overtime. Anniversary Day was not a holiday. All that was required was that, as much leave of absence ns was reasonably possible should be granted to those stewards who could be spared’. Those who could nol be spared were required to work as on any other day. without payment of-overtime. On the facts'.submitted. the other stewards who were called back, were granted as inrich leave of absence as was reasonably possible, and no overtime was payable.
