OLD PAINTING FOUND
Discovered in a Church The puri.-b ebureb al Karlahorst. an eastern suburb of Berlin, proves to bs the lucky possessor of a previously ui> known work of the great German painter, Lucas Cranach, who died in 1553. The pastor was turning over tha large collection of pictures belonging to the church—mostly of little value—and was struck by one dirty painting, the style of which suggested that it was a work of the Renaissance. He brought it to the attention of Dr. Friedlander, Director of the State Picture Gallery. Dr. Friedlander had it cleaned and restored, and discovered on it Cranach’s signature, the authenticity of which is. in iiis opinion, confirmed by the painting. The picture is about 3ff. Gin. high and Ift. Din. broad. .It shows Christ praying at Gethsemane, while tit® three disciples sleep in the foreground. In the distance the soldiers are visible on their way to make the arrest. The? picture will be permanently exhibited-' in Karlshorst Church.
