Post-War Land Speculation
Sir,—l notice in your issue of March 31 a letter written by “Economist.” With many of his conclusions I agree, but near the end there is a reference to the postwar land speculation which suggests that your correspondent has not very closely followed events. He states that, as far as his memory serves him, not a single protest was made i,n the House againsi this speculation. If he refers to Hansard No. 184, page 1024, et. seq., ho will find that Sir Joseph Ward entered a most emphatic protest against the manner iu which money was being wasted. “Economist” states that Mr. Massey sml Mr. Seddon would not have permitted this state of affairs to continue. Whatever the great Liberal protagonist might have done unddr the circumstances, his tory records that Mr. Massey did permit this speculation to continue for several rears.—l am, etc., KEEN ON FACTS. Invercargill, April 9.
"Fed Up” writes from Featherston “Judging the position from many aspectmy husband and I have decided to make our home iu Wellington for our own good. Week by week our unemployed army here gains in strength, and the Unemployment Board refuses to raise our allocation. House rents here are still at war height, the eost of living is very little lower, and we have no charitable institutions of any kind to turn to. Lately we have had an invasion of canvassers from Wellington charitable institutions combing our district for what, we so sadly used: s,> therefore wo have decided Io marshal our children aud proceed to the city to better ourselves,”
