STEER-RIDING TESTS
No Cruelty to Animals “The only cruelty in steer-riding is to the riders and certainly not to the beasts,” said Mr. J. P. Kalangher, vicepresident, at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, when a letter was received from the Auckland branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggesting that steerriding should not be included in the programme at any future show. The society said protests had been forwarded from other societies in New Zealand, with a view to the matter being taken up with the association, or failing satisfaction, to endeavour to have legislation brought in to prevent such exhibitions, which wer- considered cruel to dumb animals. Mr. Kalangher said he considered the society was mixing in a matter which it would be well advised to leave alone. None of the beasts had suffered in any way, and there was no suggestion of cruelty In steer-riding. The secretary, Mr. W. F. O’Donnell, pointed out that one of the society’s inspectors had assisted at the last show It was agreed to write to the society explaining the position am stating that it had nor ypf been decided to hold steer-riding at next year’s show.
