OBITUARY
Dr. Robert Nairn LONG SERVICE IN H.B. The death occurred at .Hastings yesterday of Dr. Robert Nairn, at the age of 70, says a “Dominion” special message.
Dr. Nairn, who was born in New Zealand, had been a resident of Hastings since early 1594. conducting his practice there from that time until the illness that caused his death, with the exception of two years devoted to war work, when lie was on a hospital ship running between Gallipoli and London. Highly respected in his profession, Dr. Nairn had also made a large circle of friends in other spheres of life, and to them his death must come as a severe blow. Dr. Nairn, who was well known throughout New Zealand, received his early education at Nelson and Wellington Colleges, completing his medical training at St. Thomas’s Hospital, London. Deceased leaves a widow and two daughters, the Misses Phillipa and Marjorie Nairn. Mr. W. J. Helyer A well-known Wellington figure passed away yesterday morning at. his residence. 338 Oriental Bay, in the person of Mr. Walter James Helyer, a very well-known citizen and a strong adher-' ent of tlie prohibition cause. The late Mr. Helyer, who was 74 years of age, came from Geelong, Victoria, to Port Chalmers .'ith his parents as a child. The family came on to Wellington a little later, and Mr. Helyer attended Mr. Finnimore’s school, a well-known private academy. On leaving school he studied pharmacy, but had to give it up for health reasons, so he took up his father’s trade, that of a stone and monumental mason, so as to be always in the open air. On his father’s death he succeeded to the business in Manners Street I next to Scott's confectionery establishment), which site was a tombstone yard for many years. Subsequently he retired and went to reside in Oriental Bay. Mr. Helyer was a staunch Methodist, a member of the New Zealand Alliance since its inception, and always a strong worker in the cause of temperance. He is survived by a widow (nee Miss A. Wrigley, of Manawatu) aud a daughter (Mrs. Steptoe, of Wellington)'. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. to-day.
