TEACHER FAREWELLED

Gathering at Trentham A social took place at Trentham vicarage recently, when Miss E. B. Bedingfield, infant mistress at Trentham School, was entertained to a tennis party and afternoon tea on the occasion of leaving the school for her marriage to Mr. W. Nelson, of Lower Hutt. Mr. W. J. Melody, headmaster, on behalf of the staff, presented the guest with a china tea service, expressing their good wishes for a happy future. Mr. Melody also expressed Ins appreciation of the loyal service given by Miss Bedingneld during the past three years. Mr. D. McIver and the Rev. G. V. Kendrick, vicar, also spoke, and among others present were Misses G. Hewitt, I. M. Kraft, I. Howe, M. McDonald, Mrs. Kendrick, and Messrs. Smith and Nelson. METHODIST WOMEN The April meeting of the Lower Hutt Methodist Ladies’ Guild took place on Thursday, with the president, Mrs. Sharp, in the chair. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. Odell, wife of the Rev. Mr. Odell, of Thorndon, whose reminiscences of -the East London Methodist Mission were most interesting. Before her departure for England Mrs. Odell spent two years and a half doing deaconess work in Australia. She took up work at the East End Mission three months before the war and remained there for four years and a half. The late Rev. Peter Thompson was the minister in charge of. the mission, and Mrs. Odell stated that so beloved was he that his funeral was one of the largest that had ever taken place in London. During the war the mission opened the largest soup kitchen in the city. At the conclusion of the talk Mrs. Sharp conveyed the thanks of the meeting to the speaker and presented her with a bouquet, which was made by Mrs. Schneider.

GLUT IN TOMATOES Market Gardeners Lose LEAVING THEM ON VINES Owing to poor returns several market gardeners in the Hutt Valley are leaving tomatoes on the vines rather than, incur the expense of sending them in to the markets in Wellington. Only a little time ago cabbages were, a glut on the market, and large quantities were dug into theground as manure. Growers in the Valley say that they are suffering from the competition of produce grown in the prison grounds at Trentham, Freights they state are being sent in from tjie prison almost daily. If the weather is favourable it is proposed by the Wellington Poultry Association‘to hold a field day at Wallaeeville similar to the one held earlier in the year. The election of councillors for the Hutt County will take place on the second Wednesday in May. County elections take place every three years instead of every two years, as in the case of boroughs. Miss E. B. Bedingfield, who recently retired from the position of infant mistress at Trentham School, will be succeeded by Mrs. Benge, at present on the staff of Thorndon Normal School, who will take up her new duties at the beginning of the second term. Miss D. Dewburst, is. the relieving teacher. Miss G. Hewitt, late of Ohakune School, has taken up her duties as assistant mistress at Trentham School in place of Mrs. Petrie (nee Rathburn), who has now taken up her residence at Hamilton with her husband, Lieut. E. Petrie, area officer in charge of that district,"
