SWIM IN HARBOUR

Lyall Bay Wins Peck Shield WATER EXTREMELY COLD In water which the competitors described as cold as ice, the annual harbour swim for the Peck Shield was held on Saturday afternoon. The trophy was won by Lyall Bay, the only Club to get four of its team home. The course, measuring 1 mile and 10S0 yards, was from a launch off Taranaki Street to Queen’s Wharf and to Taranaki Street twice. There were thirty-eight starters, only ten of whom finished.

Fifteen started on the last lap from Clyde Quay Wharf to Taranaki Street, but only ten finished. L. Peterson (15 min.), Maranui, was the first to complete the course, his actual swimming time being 57min. Fastest time was made by F. Ryan, who covered the distance in 50min. So cold was the water that one of the competitors, D. Milne, was taken to the. hospital suffering from shock caused through prolonged immersion. He was discharged from the institution yesterday afternoon.

Actual swimming times of the ten competitors who completed the course were: L. Peterson (15min.), Maranui, 57min.; F. Ryan (7min.), Lyall Bay, 50rain.; C. Eversleigh (10min.), 54 min.; W. Girling (llmin.), Hutt, 55 min.; F. Mollier (7min.), Lyall Bay, 52min.; W. Yardley (12min.), Lyall Bay), 57}min.; L. Dawkins (6min.), Lyall Bay, 52m1u.; J. Logie (lOmin.), Hutt, 56min.; R. Burns (9min. SOsec.), Maranui, 57}miD,; H. Dickson (11 min.), Lyall Bay, 60min. The previous holder of the shield was the Maranui A team.

SURF COMPETITIONS

Otaki Shield and Cup

In the presence of about 600 people, and under satisfactory weather conditions, competitions among surf clubs for the Otaki .Shield and the Otaki Cup, were held at Otaki yesterday. i Mr. C. F. Atmore, mayor of Otaki, Mr. J. Vigor Brown, donor of the trophies, and Mr. G. 8. Hill, president of the Royal Life Saving Society, addressed the gathering, after which there was a combined march past of all clubs.

The judge for the Otaki Shield was Captain J. A. Duffy, and for the Otaki Cup, Mr. W. J. Beveridge. Messrs. J. McNee, J. Foley and A. Dore acted as timekeepers.
