TROTTING RACES
Wairarapa Results SILVER DE ORO’S WIN Treble to Mr. J. R. Corrigan (By “Overcheck.**) The weather was fine but overcast for the South Wairarapa Club’s meeting at Clareville on Saturday. The course was ill good order, and some fast times were recorded, Silver de Oro winning the Mangapari Handicap in 4.32 from a 4.46 mark, while Goldzone registered 3.26 3-o in the opening event, reducing his handicap time by over IS seconds. The attendance was fair, but the totalisator business was restricted, the sum of £3337 being invested, as against £5211 for the second day of last year's annual meeting, which was held at Christmas time. Wins Comfortably. • Victor Kyle broke at the start of the Martinborough Handicap, the early leaders being Goldzone, Bara Gold and Jean Parrish. With four furlongs covered, the order was Goldzone, Bara Gold, Jean Parrish, Wisteria and David McElwyn. ' Racing down the back Jean Parrish broke and dropped back. Approaching the western bend David McElwyn. moved up, and followed Goldzone into the straight. 'The latter, however, was never seriously challenged, and won by a couple of lengths. Bara Gold was a further length back third, and Jean Parrish fouth. Hardy Grattan Wins Narrowly. ike rial Boy and Amy Eta wall commenced slowly in the Taratahi Handicap, Hardy Grattan overtaking the latter at the top of the straight the first time. At the stand Hardy Grattan had charge from Lucky Voyage, with La Campione and Amy Etawah running abreast, Aerial Boy being well back. There was little change over the nest four furlongs, though La Campione and Amy Etawah each broke a couple of times. At the top of the straight Lucky Voyage appeared to have the measure of Hardy Grattan, but the latter hung on well in the straight and won by about half a length. La Campione finished well, and got to within a length of Lucky Voyage. Amy Etawah was a poor fourth. An Outsider Scores. A good start was effected in the Carterton Handicap, excepting that Native Berry failed to go away. At the stand the first time Tui Coronado had charge from Daddy Longlegs, who was followed by Huia Maid, Murchimes, Teri Kingi and Mihad. Tui Coronado and Daddy Longlegs had a substantial lead down the back. Three furlongs from home Murchimes moved up, while Tui Coronado began to give ground. Daddy Longlegs led into the straight, from ■■Murchimes, Tui Coronado and Huia Maid. In the run home Daddy Longlegs was never seriously threatened and won nicely by two lengths from Murchimes, who was a like distance in front of. the faster finishing Huia Maid. Tui Coronado was a close fouth. Silver de Oro Strolls Home. An indifferent start was effected in
the Mangapari Handicap. As usual Highland Derby failed to go away correctlv, while Sandown was badly left. Silver de Oro assumed command immediately. She put in a bit of a skip before a furlong had been covered, but did not lose her position. With a mile covered the order was Silver de Oro, Native Hero, Whippet, Hilltop, Sandown and Lady Author. Whippet improved, his position down the back and at the top of the straight had run into second berth, Rangihau and Native Hero following. Silver de Oro strolled home on her own, having an advantage of about twelve lengths at the finish. Whippet and Rangihau had a spirited duel for second money, the former prevailing by a length. Native Hero was fourth. Favourite Wins Nicely. Historian was made favourite for the Featherston Handicap, and he never caused his supporters any anxiety. Venetian Lady broke at the start, and then almost came down at the end of two furlongs. Historian was the first to show out, and at the end of two furlongs had charge from Wisteria, Bara Gold, Jean Parrish, Salvage and Venetian Lady, who made a good recovery after slipping. 1 First Bara Gold and then David McElwyn made forward moves down the back stretch, but neither made much impression on Historian, who held his lead to win by two lengths from David McElwyn. Wisteria finished better than Bara Gold and secured third money. Bara Gold and Venetian Lady were the next to finish. A Poor Race. There was little of interest in the running of the Stewards’ Handicap. Aerial Boy broke at the start, Amy Etawah taking charge from Lucky Voyage and La Campione, with Aerial Boy well back. Racing down the back in the last round Lucky Vovage easily headed Amy Eta, wall, who broke, La Campione then running into second place. The latter came up fast approaching the straight, but went to a break, leaving Lucky Voyage to run home an easy winner by four lengths. Amy Etawah was two lengths behind La Campione. A Popular Win. Tui Coronado, Native Berry and Teri Kingi were left on the mark in the Greytown Handicap, the early leaders being Bara Gold, Marvin Bingen, Mihad and Huia Maid. At the end of a mile Bara Gold was still in charge from Mihad, Marvin Bingen, Huia Maid and Murchimes. Six furlongs from home Huia Maid ran to the front from Lady Coronado, lilihad breaking. At the straight entrance there was little between Huia Maid and Lady Coronado, with Murchimes handily placed. In a good finish Huia Maid outstayed Lady Coronado to win by a length, with Murchimes the same distance back third. Bara Gold, who was having her third race, was fourth. Completes Treble. Sandown, Silver 'de Oro, Murchimes and Whippet were scratched for the Final Handicap, leaving a field of oeven, of whom Poi was made favourite. Highland Derby repeated his earlier performance by remaining on the mark. The early leaders were Lightwood, Poi, Native Hero and Rangihau. Poi ran into the lead down the 'back, closely followed by Rangihau, Lightwood dropping back. Pol was never afterward in danger of defeat, and she ultimately won comfortably by two lengths. Jewell Elect finished well in third place, with Native Hero fourth. ? Results in Detail MARTINBOROUGH HANDICAP* (harness), of 60 sovs.; second 10, third 5; 3.45 class. One mile and a hall. 2 J. H.
