HATED IN GERMANY
Possible Abolition of Word “Reparations” CONFERENCE IN JUNE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Rec. February 14, 5.5 p.m.). London, February 13. It is reported from Geneva that Sir John Simon and M. Tardieu have arranged for the Reparations Conference to be held in June. The “Daily Herald’s” Geneva correspondent states that behind this announcement lies a definite plan for a permanent settlement. It is believed that the word “reparations” is so hateful to Germans that it will be abolished. The conditional payments will be abandoned in view of Germany’s inability to pay them, while the unconditional payments will be reduced and made variable yearly according to the “prosperity index.'” Compared with the present £30,000,000 a year, the new starting point might be between £10,000,000 and £20,000,000.
The proposals are now being submitted to the other Powers.
