SURPRISE RESULT

Tennis Champion Beaten WAIRARAPA TOURNEY Play on Opening Day Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 20., The only surprise in the first day’s play of tlie Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championships tournament, which commenced at Masterton to-day, was the defeat in the second round of the women’s singles of Miss M. Whyte, North Island champion. Miss Whyte went down to Miss W. Graham, of Pahlatua, 7 —5, 2—6, 6 —4. She stated after the match that she was still troubled by her ankle, a tendon of which she strained while playing in the North Island tournament at Palmerston North a fortnight ago. Certainly she was content to let a number of shots go which one would have expected a player of her calibre to attempt to return. Not so Miss Graham. This young player, who was Wairarapa girl champion in 1930, went after every ball. She played a good length and her accuracy, coupled with her keenness, enabled her to defeat the champion. Although Miss Whyte did not reproduce her form of a fortnight ago, she played good tennis and extended her young opponent to the utmost. This was the only outstanding game played during the day, the majority of games being won fairly easily and few going to more than two sets. The standard of play on to-day’s showing appears quite as high as that of previous tournaments. With 660 entries, the committee is faced with no mean task to complete the tournament by the end of the week, but the organisation of the secretary, Mr. H. M. Boddlngton, is excellent, as usual. With 21 courts available, good progress with both championship and handicap events was - made to-day. The courts are all showing the effects of the prolonged spell of dry weather, but are in good playing condition. The weather conditions were perfect.
