FIGUREHEADS IN THE FLEETS. The romance of the sea has never been better expressed than in the beautiful figureheads that were the pride of the ships of long ago. Romance has not been so much in evidence in the ships of more modern times, which are built on utilitarian lines. It is now proposed that figureheads should be revived in the British Navy. These figureheads would not be on the old scale. They would consist of small metal castings of a design suitable to express the individuality of the ship. There is a real value in anything which encourages “esprit de corps” in the fighting services, and from this point of view it is considered that a strong case can be made out for figureheads in the fleets.
