From Town and Country LAND FOR CULTIVATION Dominion Special Service. A large area of land known as Matakarapa and situated opposite Foxton on the other side of the Manawatu River is being brought into cultivation under Sir Apirana Ngata’s Native Land Settlement Scheme. A big burn took place in the swamp, recently, and. when the area, which comprises high grounds as well as swamp, is ready it should prove a valuable asset to Foxton. - ' V” Describing the saving that would be effected by the institution of a fiveday working week in the Waitotara county as “pin-pricking," members of the council postponed the discussion of- a motion to that effect until the end of the financial year. The chairman, Mr. W. Morrison, opposed the motion on the grounds that the Waitotara county paid less' wages than others. Rationing would cause discontent, and already wages had been reduced. The finances of the county were .solid. Objection to certain suggested alterations to the award affecting dairy company employees was expressed by directors of the Mauriceville Co-oper-ative Dairy Company when notice regarding them was received from the Dairy Awards Committee. The following resolution was carried: “That such alterations will mean an increase of over £2OO in the manufacturing costs of the Mauriceville Dairy Company, and that during the present economic position of the country the directors of this company consider that there ought not to be any interference with the present award unless it be such as to bring about a reduction in costs.” A match between Eketahuna and Mauriceville junior cricketers was played at Mauriceville during the week-end, and resulted in a win for the home team by> eight wickets. Eketahuna in the first innings scored 74 runs (Hausman 31), and Mauriceville replied with 77 (Bennett 18, Stack 17, Hood 14). In the second innings Eketahuna was dismissed for 39. Mauriceville declared with two wickets down for 47 (Echold 25 not out, A. Neilsen, 14 not out). The* following Masterton candidates passed in the rudiments of music at the November examinations conducted in Masterton by the Associated Board of tl o Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music, London: —Marjorie G. Mac Kay (Mr. F. H. Taylor), Noeline J. McLaren (Miss M. F. Watson), Penelope A. Simmers (Mr. F. H. Taylor). • 1 : . ' V ' : In spite of the dry weather, the Mauriceville Co-operative Dairy Company reports a continued increase in cream supplies. The increase in the quantity of butter manufactured to date over the corresponding period of last season is 57 tons 9 cwt. The company has continued its selling policy this season and excellent forward sales have been made. The present advances on consignment notes are Bid on finest and B|d on first grade butter. It was pointed out at a meeting of the directors on Monday that the advance rates were in all probability callculated to meet any possible reclamations. It was therefore decided to make the ppyout for the month ninepence, which was stated to be a very conservative figure considering the forward sales made by the company. .
