Dominion Tourney Opens INITIAL ROUNDS Surprise Wins and Defeats By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, January 11. In perfect summer weather, the nineteenth annual championship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was commenced on city and suburban greens to-day. The search for the 1932 Dominion champions will last about a fortnight. Four rounds of sectional play in the singles championship were played, the matches being distributed among twelve greens. During the long spell of dry weather groundsmen have had a difficult task to keep the turf in good order, but almost without exception the greens gave every satisfaction, playing fast and true once the moisture, from the rain of the previous night had dried out under the effects of a hot sun. The tournament was formally declared open by Mr. H.~B. Oakey, president of the New Zealand Bowling Association, who extended a welcome to the players. The entries, he said, had been very satisfactory and were marked by quality if not by quantity. He expressed a hope that players would have an enjoyable and successful tournmaent. Some Surprises. The initial four rounds provided the usual crop of surprise victories and defeats, and the ultimate winner seems well concealed. Several ex-title-holders failed to live up to their reputations. At the end of the day's play the following are still in : — Section A.—No losses, Reese; one loss, Williams, Mclnne.s. Gardiner, and Thomas. Section B.—No losses, Hutchison; one loss. Raphael, Marris. Tyrrell, and Archer. Section C. —No losses. Foster; one loss, H. Mackay, Williams, Childs, and Colthurst. Section D.—No losses, Scott; one loss, Martin, Dobbs, Manning, and Jack. Section E. —Np losses, Lannay; one loss, Thomas. Jones. Edwards, and Adams. Section F.—No losses, Walker; one loss. Cother, Gray, Goldstone, and Hardley. Section G. —No losses, Hinchcliff; one loss, Macky, Dowland, Ufton, and Chapman. Section H.—No losses, bomas; one loss, Cuming. Bremner. Jacobsen, and O’Brien. ' Section I. —No losses, Haworth; one loss, Hampton, Ferguson, Baldwin, and Seddon. Section J.—No losses, Edwards; one loss, Hardley, Rolls. Longworth, and Fox.
