125 MILES AN HOUR
Smith Tests Enterprise GOOD TRIAL RUN Attempt on Record To-day CONFIDENT OF SUCCESS By Telegraph—Press Association, Ninety Mile Beach, January 11. “I like the car very much indeed, I did 125 miles an hour on a sniff throttle,” said Mr. Norman Smitti at the conclusion of his first trial run in the "Enterprise” this afternoon. The beach was bad yesterday, and the ■ party was considering abandoning the attempt till January 22, but there was a big improvement to-day, and Smith decided to test the car. At about five o’clock it was towed out of the garage on to the course. After a false start the Enterprise got properly going, and raced down the beach with its exhaust roaring, but well throttled down. As he was running on road tires be only made a run of about four miles and a half, and was then towed back to the garage. , , , Smith later stated that he reached 125 miles an hour, and said he was very satisfied with the performance of the car. It was wonderfully cool after the spin. Mr. J. H. Mostyn, Mr. Smith s manager, also was pleased. "The ten and five-mile records are in our pockets.’ he said, "and we ought to have no difficulty with the flying mile.” He predicted Mr. Smith would attain 245 miles an hour in a five-mile dash and 285 miles an hour in the mile. It was stated earlier that Mr. Butcher and the timing' officials were going back to Auckland to-morrow unless the conditions improved, but Mr. Smith now states that he will make the attempt to-morrow if the beach and the wind are- right. He will try for the ten-mlle record at least.
