MATE TAKES BLAME
Caused Stranding of Ship PUNISHED BY THE COURT (Rec. January 11,11.15 p.m.) Sydney, January 11. A Court of Marine Inquiry has investigated the stranding of the steamer Newton Elm on December 19. George Davidson, the first mate, admitted that while he was at the wheel he erroneously altered the course to the westward, Instead of to the eastward, and to sea, causing the vessel to run on a beach on the North Coast. The weather was then hazy on the land but clear at sea. Expert evidence was given as to the very extensive damage done to the vessel’s hull. The court suspended Davidson*s certificate for six months.
