City Rating Valuations

Sir, —Is it not a fair thing, in view of the slump in city and surbuban values since the last rate notice, to ask that before the next rate demand is issued by the City Council, a fresh valuation should be made, bringing rating down to something approaching present values? When one sees, as lately happened, a suburban section valued at £3OO sold at auction for £75, and when it is realised how many hundreds of ratepayers this year are quite unable to pay the rates due, would it not be better to get down to bedrock values, if only to enable ratepayers to meet their obligations with a lessened burden? lam asking this question in the interests both of the ratepayers and of the Wellington City Council.—l am. etc., A. H. GIBSON. Ngaio, January 11.,
