BATHER DROWNED

Off Beach at Pefone COULD NOT SWIM Diving in Deep Water Yesterday afternoon, a few minutes after 2 o’clock, Mick Borich, a Dalmatian, aged 23 years, and living at 192 Jackson Street, Petone, Was drowned off the Petone beach opposite Bay Street. The body, which was clothed in a bathing suit, was first noticed in the water by three youths in a boat. They secured a boathook and, getting the body ashore, attempted artificial respiration. Dr. R. Bakewell was sent for, but on arrival he could only pronounce life to be extinct. It was stated that Borich, who could not swim, but who had been receiving lessons, was seen at various times in the morning diving off the furthest raft. When the tide is in the water is over a man’s head there. It is understood that deceased came to New Zealand when about six years of age, and that he had no relatives in the Dominion. A bachelor, George Taylor, aged 70, was found in the surf at Patiti Point about a mile from Timaru this afternoon. When the body was recovered artificial respiration was applied, but without success.
