(By Vera Wise.) . Copyright. Carbonate of soda gives instant relief to a burn. Spread a little on a bandage wrung out of cold water; cover thickly enough to exclude air, but do not tie too tight. A bottle of carron oil should be taken on your holidays, or after surfing, for treatment of painful sunburn. Limewater mixed with siveet oil is also very efficacious for sunburn, scalds, or burns. If you propose to “hike,” your shoes must be old and trusted friends. Do not believe those veterans of the game who say that you MUST wear boots; if you are not used to them, they will irritate your ankles beyond endurance. Shoes with oiled uppers and stout soles are best for anything except serious mountaineering, when protection and support for the ankles is essential. If your shoe rubs your heel, temporary relief can be obtained by placing a couple of pieces of thick under your heel, which, raises the rubbed place above the edge of the shoe.
