SUBSIDISED JOBS

Christmas Relief Work FIFTY-FIFTY BASIS Citizens who can- find jobs on their properties for a few days are advised that the Government, through fhe Unemployment Boar<J, is prepared to subsidise wages on a 50-50 basis up to 7/a day for work approved by the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee. In a circular to the committee, the Unemployment Commissioner, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, notified the committee that £l5OO had been provided as special Christmas relief. The amount was to be expended in providing some extra relief work during the fortnight ended December 24. The additional relief work was to be granted in the most necessitous cases of eligible unemploys ed workers as determined by the local committee. •

The circular states that any relief, work granted under this allocation is to be in addition to the work available from the allocation ordinarily provided under scheme 5, and may simply be provided in the same way. Any work approved by the committee may come under this scheme, and persons who wish to have work done Should make application to the Relief Labour Bureau at Buckle Street.

Another decision "made by the committee was that first consideration In employing men be given to the 700 eligible and registered men who so far have had no relief work at all, and that the w r ork be parcelled out as under the No. 5 scheme—to two, three, and fourday men, as otherwise friction might be caused with those at present on No. 5 relief jobs.
