THE RACING WORLD
WORK AT TRENTHAM s Gay Crest’s Auckland Cup Weight NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher,”) Acceptances for the first day of the Manawatu .Racing Club’s summer meeting, to be held on December 26, 28 and 29. will close on Friday, at 9 p.m. Acceptances lor the summer meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club on Boxing Day will close on Thursday at 8 p.m. The Danncvirke meeting on Wednesday and the Hoi’orata meeting on Saturday are the only racing fixtures this week. Great Star has been doing long, strong work the reverse way at Riccarton, which points to him having a tilt at the Auckland Cup. Black Duke, Charmaine. and Mount Boa may be regarded as unlikely to make the Auckland trip. They have been nominated for the Dunedin Jockey CluO’s meet- ' ing. King March is to resume work with J. T. Jamieson’s team at Takanini to-day. lie has done well and appears to be quite sound after his lengthy spell. J. L. Gray has received another addition to his team at Takanini. Few particulars are available about the newcomer other than that he hails from Gisborne and is by Colossus. He is a solid-looking chestnut, and appears to have been well cared for. Cricket Bat was nominated for the Champion Hack Handicap at the Wairarapa meeting, but he is not eligible to run in the event. S. Wilson has been engaged to ride Balloon in the Manawatu Cup. No Rehandicap for Gay Crest. As a result of Gay Crest’s victory in the Bolton Handicap at Woodville on Wednesday, he became eligible for a rehandicap in the Auckland Cup, but Mr. F. J. McManemin has decided not to impose any penalty, and Gay Crest’s original weight, 9.0, will be allowed to stand, Captain Dollar for Sydney. The Takanini trainer C. Morse shipped Captain Dollar to Sydney by. the Ulimaroa on Friday. Great hopes were earlier entertained about the son of Paper Money and Piquant, who has a great turn <>f speed, but has so far failed to develop stamina. It is probable that he will be sold upon his arrival in Sydney. Eaglet Under a-Cloud. The Auckland Cup candidate Eaglet is under a cloud. She was absent from the track at Takanini last week, and it is feared that leg trouble may \be coming against her. She has been galloping well, and it will be a matter for regret if she is unable to keep her Christmas engagements. Pewa Should Stay. Pewa, who defeated Compris on the second day at Woodville, was.a good performer in hack company.last season, and. now looks as if he would go on to much better deeds in open events. He is a four-year-old by Arausio, his dam, Parearau, being by Demosthenes, from Mangnoroa, by San Fran from Maude, a St. Leger mare from Hilda, by Musket from Quids. This is one of the most successful of the old New Zealand families, among its members being some great ,stayers. For this reason it is worth keeping Pewa in mind for a good race over a distance later in the season. Royal Baby’s Future. It is feared that the trouble witli Roya’ Baby, who ■ was lame after racing at Woodville on Wednesday, is serious. If such be the case she will be sent to the stud and mated with Hoylake, an imported son of Poltava. Hoylake was formerly trained in the same stable. Royal Baby is by Chief Ruler from the Australian mare Baby Doll, by BobaMl from Sessa, by Wallace. Return of Nightinarch. Mr. G. Kain will send Nightmarch to Riccarton in the near future, and he will be put into training right away. He has had regular exercise at Otari. It is possible that his reappearance will be made in the James Hazlett Gold Cup at Dunedin in February. For Auckland. Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s trio' for Auckland, Delice, Jaloux and Azalia, worked strongly the reverse, way at Riccarton on Saturday morning. Azalia, who raced very well at Riccarton, is in great heart, and Jaloux will set out thoroughly equipped as regards condition for his important task in the Auckland Cup. P. V. Mason is due to leave for the north on Thursday night. Trentham Track 'Work. Trentham trainers had fine, mild and windless conditions for work on Saturday morning, though the sky was heavily overcast. The plough track was mostly used, and it was very fast despite watering. . Normandy, who is looking in good order, sprinted a half in uOsee. comfortably. Red Sun drew away from Moab Queen at the end of six in lmin. 15}sec., a good effort. Red Sun goes well. Sailing and Bright Song ran five in lmin. ssec„ Sailing doing better. Lady Pam Fit.
Lady Pam and Vitaphone ran seven together in lmin. 30}sec., and then Vitaphone pulled up, Lady Pam completing a circuit,' which is about 70 yards or so' short of ten furlongs, in 2min. She is in good order for Manawatu So far no riding engagement has been made. Vitaphone's performance for a maiden was quite a good one. He will go to Dannevirke. Solitaire II was better than Retract over five in 1:3} —a good gallop. Retract carried plenty of weight. L. 11, Watson’s Case. ' The jockey L. H. Watson has issued a writ for £lOOO for damages against the New Zealand racing authorities. The legal act follows his disqualification for life, and comes from Western Australia, whither he claims to have travelled before hearing that there was any charge against him (says the Sydney “Referee”). Watson has ridden a good deal in Sydney,- over jumps and on the flat, but for some time prior to the action of the New Zealand authorities, he had been riding in the Dominion. He states that while passing through Fremantle on his way to Colombo a few weeks ago. he read by accident in a newspaper that he had been disqualified for life in New Zealand for alleged participation in a racing conspiracy. He arrived at Fremantle aboard the steamer Cathay, and disembarked to consult legal o'pinion ashore. Watson further says that when he left New Zealand a little over six months ago he was given a clearance to Melbourne and another to Perth. He says he was not notified of any inquiry being held, nor given a ehance to appear and defend himself. He adds bitterly: “In common fairness, if nothing else, I should have had the opportunity to answer whatever charge was made, and to hear what was alleged against inc, before I was sentenced.” Watson has already commenced proceedings to endeavour to have the disqualification annulled.
