County Rates
Sir, —It is widely advertised throughout the country that the Coalition Government is subsidising the counties to enable the local bodies to make a rebate of 12} per cent, on rates. Now, Sir, this all sounds very nice, but there is another side to it. I have it on good authority that counties which have economised and reduced the rates are not eligible so that it is a premium on extravagance—the thrifty farmer is again penalised. I refer in particular to Eketahuna county, and would like to say it has a large amount of rates uncollectable from soldier settlers on Tiraumea. —I am, etc., FAIR PLAY.
