P. N. ROBINSON WINS
Sports & Cycling at Petone
In winning the Laykold Cup mile handicap at Petone on Saturday, P. N. Robinson, leading Wellington amateur cyclist, rode as fine a race as has been seen here for a long time. The field included a number of the best cyclists in Christchurch, Wellington, and Masterton, but Robinson was a match for them in riding and tactics. He won by half a length from T. O’Brien and F. Grose, both of ChristO’Brien is the present national 100-mile road champion, but was beaten by Robinson both on Saturday and in the recent Palmerston North-Wellington race. He rode a good race, however, and was defeated by a better man. The Laykold Cup handicap, over a fivemile course, is an annual event, sponsored by the Petone Amateur Athletic and cycling Club, affiliated to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Conditions on Saturday were almost ideal for cycling and running, although the ground was a little hard for the athletes. Nearly a thousand people attended the meeting. The other special cycling event was the mile invitation, in which' eight riders started. Grose won from Pearce with Robinson third, but the time was not parlarly fast. In the athletic events, H, Marment, a young Athletic club runner, was prominent in the sprints. He was second in the 100 yards with a handicap of 10 yards. Among the women, Miss Jean Murray and Miss S. Fossett were the most consistent.
