MOTOR TOURISTS
Wellington’s Lack of Camp Site MOA POINT, LATER ON The question of establishing another motor camp site in Wellington in place of the abandoned one at Karorl Park was again discussed at the meeting of the executive of the Wellington Automobile Club last evening. The hope was expressed that it would be possible to get an adequate site at Moa Point, Lyall Bay, in about a year’s time. ' • The chairman, Mr. E. A. Batt, reported that he, with the secretary and Mr. A. J. Patterson, had waited upon the town clerk. It would be recalled that the City Council desired the club to contribute £GOO toward establishing a temporary site at Lyall Bay, in return for which special concessions would be made to members of the club. On the face of it that was ridiculous, as it would be spending the club’s money ou a temporary small area which would not provide the necessary accommodation. It should not be the function of the club to provide a motor camp site. The City Council should be sufficiently enterprising, as were other New Zealand towns, where the motor camps were made very attractive with the idea of inducing people to visit them and spend holidays there. , x It had been pointed out to the town clerk, said the chairman, that the city had an asset in Lyall Bay, aud a camp site would attract a tremendous number of people. The deputation was met with the usual “hard-up” story, “we haven’t got any money and noth? ing can be done.” A clear understanding was arrived at with the town clerk and director of reserves, that the club would prefer the matter to rest until early next year, when the bigger camp site at Moa Point could be developed and could be got ready in 12 months’ time. Mr, I. V. Wilson thought a camp site in Wellington would be used by members of the club, who would camp there with their families at week-ends. The chairman considered it would be a profitable proposition for the City Council, as the site could be used for camping during the summer months and for sports and other games in the winter. ■ Mr. Palliser thought some of the men engaged in scratching about and grubbing gorse should be turned on to the preparation of the camp site at once. It was decided to go into the matter again early in the New Year.
