SPEED-BOAT CONTEST
Race for Harmsworth Trophy
FIRST HEAT POSTPONED
(Rec. September 6, 5.5 p.m.)
New York, September 5.
A choppy sea whipped by a southwest wind over the Detroit River, caused the postponement on Saturday of the first heat of the Harmsworth Trophy speedboat race until 5.30 p.m. on Sunday. The respite will probably be welcome to Gar Wood, the defender, whose chief contender, Miss America the Ninth, was disabled on Friday, and was only made ready by a score of mechanics who worked through the night and most of to-day replacing a broken manifold on one of the super-chargers. The task facing Kay Don has been made materially less by the announcement that Horace E. Dodge has withdrawn Miss Syndicate the Third. Previously Gar Wood had withdrawn Miss America the Fifth, leaving only Miss America the Eighth and Miss America the Ninth for Don to compete against with Miss England the Second.
