BLUNT MAKES 225

Remarkable Batting in Opening Innings N.Z. AND GENTLEMEN By Telegraph—Press Aasn.—Copyright Eastbourne, September 8. A magnificent double-century by Blunt was a feature of the cricket match between New Zealand and the Gentlemen of England, which commenced to-day. The other batsmen were disappointing. The wicket and the outfield were slow. New Zealand’s Innings realised 877 runs, and at stumps the Gentlemen had made 22 runs without loss. The attendance was 8000. Gentlemen of England: Bryan, Wyatt, Merkel, Newman, Flddlan-Green, Foster, Crubdbley, Brown, Benson, Altham, and Wagener. New Zealand: Dowry, Mill*, Weir, Blunt, Kerr, Vivian, Page, Talbot, Cromb, Allcott, and Merritt. Lowry won the toss, and Mills and Weir opened for New Zealand. Mills made 16 and Weir 36, after which Kerr and Lowry were both bowled In playing too soon in attempts to hit short deliveries. Blunt dominated the batting, and soon settled down to play an innings

which, from the viewpoint of technique, was his finest of the tour. Talbot assisted him in making 96 for the fifth wicket, and Cromb helped in compiling 84 for the ninth wicket. Blunt carried his bat for 225, the highest score ever made by a New Zealand representative. He batted for 261 minutes, and gave a chanceless display, his score including twenty-nine fours. The dead wicket was of no assistance to the bowlers, and Brown was seldom dangerous. Bryan and Fiddian-Green batted for twenty minutes before stumps were drawn. Details:— NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.
