N.Z. BATS SOUNDLY

But Sussex Left in a Winning Position MATCH ENDS IN DRAW, By Telegraph—Prewa Asm.—Copyright. Brighton, September L The match between New Zealand and Sussex was drawn. The county's first Innings was declared closed at the overnight score of 549 for nine wickets, and the visitors again failed to take advantage of a good start, although a total of 805 was reached. Fine weather prevailed, and there was an attendance of 2000. _ The New Zealand team was left with a deficit of 164 runs on the first innings. Dempster and Mills opened, and the former was bowled by one of Tate’s deliveries, which turned In sharply. Mills and Blunt batted In their best form, and at lunch the score was 116 for two wickets. Mills, who batted for 100 minutes in making 64, registered eight 4’s. Blunt continued to bat soundly, hls late cutting being excellent. Talbot assisted him after lunch In wiping off the arrears, but when five short of the century Blunt just dislodged a ball in playing back to Parks, and In this he was exceedingly unlucky. He batted for 160 minutes, and hls score included six 4’s. The remaining batsmen chiefly lost their wickets in attempting to force the pace. Talbot and Kerr batted steadily, and Merritt hit freely in the closing stages of the Innings. Bowling with a new ball after 200 runs had been scored, Wensley struck form, and, swinging away late, he made pace off the pitch. Lowry and James were caught in the slips, and Vivian played on. Sussex needed 142 runs for victory, and Bowley and Parks batted for half an hour before stumps were drawn. Details: — KW ZEALAND. First innings 385 Second Innings. Dempster, b. Tate 9 Mills, c.
