CITY UNEMPLOYED
Steady Increase for Months
The exact number of the unemployed in Wellington is unknown. The records of the labour bureau give some indication, but the figures are incomplete, as many unemployed men must have been able to keep going without registering as such and sq qualifying for work under the No. 5 scheme. The registrations, however, serve as a reliable barometer to the number of those unemployed who are seriously “up against it.” At the beginning of March last the number registered for employment under the scheme was 4088. By the end of the month it had risen to 4642, and after the reregistration period in April it stood at 3425. Then it climbed again to 3944 at the beginning of June, and a month later was 4263. Successive weekly increases took it to 4980 on August 17. This was the peak registration. The last total announced was 4762, registered on August 24.
The Island Bay Progressive Association decided last evening not to affiliate with the Wellington City Ratepayers' Association.
