NINETY CANDLES
Mr. R. A. Loughnan’s Birthday VETERAN JOURNALIST It is not given to every Rotarian to live ninety years. Mr. R. A. Loughnan, the doyen of New Zealand journalists, is the first one to attain that honour in New Zealand, and he was done singular honour by his club in the Tudor Room at Kirkcaldie and Stains yesterday afternoon. At a given signal a two-decker birthday cake, aflame with ninety candles of various hues, was placed before the Chief Rotarian, Mr. H. Teagle, who said it was his duty to tender congratulations to Rotarian R. A. Loughnan on the anniversary of his birthday. He understood that Rotarian Loughnan had. that day attained the ripe old age of ninety years—(applause)—and they were one and all proud to have him still as an active member of the club. He was a Rotarian at heart, a charter member, and that he was able to meet and associate with them was a cause for rejoicing. The club was proud to have Rotarian Loughnan as a member, and to assure him that he held the love and esteem of every member of the club. Adjusting the gold Rotary wheel button of honoured membership in the lapel of the nonogenarian, the chairman said that he trusted Rotarian Loughnan would be spared for many a year to enjoy the fellowship of the club. After the chorus “For He's a Jolly Good Fellow,* Rotarian Loughnan returned thanks for all the good wishes expressed on his behalf. It made him feel that he would like to live another ninety years to have the pleasure of such a birthday all over again. He hoped that the life of every member of the club would be as carefree and pleasant as his had been. He expressed the hope that all members would prove worthy of the magnificent traditions of the club to which they were all proud to belong. Rotarian Loughnan was then fined sixpence by the chairman for the free advertisement which had been given him by “The Dominion” that morning. The big birthday cake was then cut, and each member was given a piece, as well as a coloured candle, in memory of the occasion.
