HUTT VALLEY NEWS

HUTT PIPE BRIDGE Possible Improvements WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY? A conference of representatives of local bodies is to be held to-day in connection with the pipe bridge at the end of Jackson Street, I’etone. The local bodies concerned are the Wellington City Council, Petone Borough, Lower Hutt Borough, and the Hutt County. Representations have frequently been made for various improvements to be effected but nothing has been done because of the uncertainty as to who is the responsible local body. Each one seems to deny liability. Among the improvements asked for are better lighting on the bridge itself, and also for tbe approaches; and a rearrangement of the foot bridge for pedestrians. It has been many times contended that the bridge is dangerous to pedestrians from motor traffic. Suggestions have been made that a footbridge should be cambered on the outside of i the bridge. Complaint has also been made of the way the boards run along the floor of the bridge, and the spaces between some; of them. It is hoped as the outcome of the .conference that it will be possible for the various local bodies to determine upon a uniform policy in all matters connected with the bridge for the future. Users of the bridge, and residents of the district, have hitherto been unable to ascertain to whom they should make complaints regarding the bridge.
