Symphony Orchestras
Sir, —In your issue of Saturday, Au?:ust 22, M. Balokovic is represented as aughing at the idea .of more than one symphony orchestra in Wellington. I* the idea after all so ludicrous? Has Wellington gone back or forward musically during the time in which it has had two such orchestras under separate conductorship? Apart from the value of competition there is much to gain by . diverse outlook on musical interpretation. The fact is, Wellington is now doing orchestral work which would, not disgrace a town twice its size. Is this in spite of its two orchestras, or because of them? Is it not, perhaps, a direct result of th* working out of a principle essential to progress in any form or art—an open field to all-comers, and no monopoly!— lam ’ etC -’ , MX.O. Wellington, August 24.
