WINTER SHOW

Further Awards Made JUDGING OF POULTRY Photographic Exhibits A large attendance was recorded both day and evening at the Wellington Winter Show yesterday, where there is much to interest both young and old. Side-shows continue to be. well.patronised, and. th# “dodge-’ems” and the like are especially popular with the children. Particular interest appears to be centred on the many wonderful pieces of machinery that are on show, a matchbox making machine, a knitting machine, and a machine for making envelopes, all of which are working, being especially singled out for attention. There are demonstrations by a talking motion-picture machine, of which all the. parts were made in New Zealand, while a display by - the Wellington Aero Club, with a miniature aeroplane buzzing above the stall, holds the attention of many. The display of the Wellington Education Board this year does’not cover 7 quite as much space as that exhibited last year, but the quality of the exhibits is not only well up to standard, but even better than that.of previous years.’ Schools’ Display. It was arranged that the board’s display should be mainly an agricultural exhibit comprising roots and garden . produce correlated with /agricultural indoor work. Owing, however, to the late date’ of the show, which is really a spring rather than a winter show, it was. found that the greater part of the produce from the ■school gardens which had been selected and put aside for the show were past their best and could not be kept. As soon as the board realised this,- schools wer# asked to. send a general nature: study, forestry, and agricultural exhibit; so that , the board’s display would he representative of the high standard of work which is now expected from its exhibit at the show. . . ; The-work exhibited is entirely that of Hie children comprising a selected assortment of nature-study collections made by the children.? The; educational value :of these is set out in the correlated-observa-tional studies with deductions, drawings, .brush work, ttnd.notes. •;>.■■■ £ .T The remainder of : the exhibit# consist of. collections of weeds,.grass: collections, collection of varleties-’of .wheat, collections mounted and named Of New Zealand native trees, flower, and plant -.studies, observational drawings, ■ colour and design work based on nature, study 1 observations, brash work,- pen ■ and ink drawings and diagrams, written- notes and weather charts. Collections of native timber# and agricultural woodwork also. .find a place. The results of the photographic exhibits and of the Poultry; Pigeon and Canary Show were;announced yesterday.; ;■ i.The photographs exhibited are of a Consistently ‘.high standard, and)*- is, perhaps the comparatively, large, number. of bromoil prints, a very effective. process, but not greatly in vogue. ; 7 - . ( In commenting, on the photographs, the fdd^,*Mr. J. M. Ellis, said: standard of accomplishment is well sustained this year, and although there is a slight decrease of entries in certain classes, there is evidence of more knowledge and a . better grip of the essentials of picturemaking throughout than previously. Most of the subjects appear to have been carefully chosen with an eye. to, making a satisfactory composition since there ; is not a single example of mediocre work in the whole collection. • One of the most pleasing features of the exhibition is the marked improvement in, the mounting and" labelling.” ■ ; ~ 7 .
