UNEMPLOYED MEN
Petone Committee Meeting About sixty members of the Petone unemployed met recently in the Labour Hall, when the chairman, Mr. R. Pattison, reviewed past work and outlined the future policy in regard to entertainments arranged for the purpose of raising money for the relief funds. It was stated that Mr. Arnold, of the Empire Skating Rink, had donated £4 6/6, the proceeds of an evening. Several offers by Petone artists to perform at a'concert to be held on September 1 were accepted. A football’ match will be held shortly to help augment the funds. Mr. H. Craven was elected to the committee, and also chairman. Mr. R. Pattison will continue to represent the committee on the Citizens’ Committee. The granting of free passes to ■* the Grand Theatre was greatly appreciated. Worß at Upper Hutt Approximately'3oo men are registered as unemployed at Upper Hutt, although the numbers actually working fluctuate between 150 and 170 a week. The returns for last week show that there are 34 single men working 2 days, 79 married men on 3 days, and 46 married men on 4 days. Extensive improvements are being effected at Maidstone Park by the unemployed. A hockey ground and several tennis courts are being laid down, and a
gravel drive bordering the sport® fields is being constructed. The Upper Hutt School ground® are being levelled, and a football field fs being formed at Trentham SchooL Other men are working on the extension of Gard Street, Silverstream, where a new road and footpaths are being constructed. The remainder of the men are engaged in clearing the streets of weeds and effecting general repairs.
