THE RACING WORLD

TRENTHAM TRACKS

Two-year-olds at Work NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.”) Entries for the New Zealand C.up will close at 8 o’clock to-night. 1 Nominations for the Wanganui spring meeting will close at 9 o’clock to-night. According to wireless reports, R. Reed rode a winner at Menangle on Tuesday. The Trentham horseman A. Tinsley, at present with C. Pritchard, intends to join up with M. Conway, at Hawera. A. Jenkins, who usually rides Callapat in hurdle races, has received advice from the owner that his services will not be required at the Hunt meeting to-morrow. This probably means that Callapat will start In his flat engagement. The “Southland Times” reports that Mr. T. Baird’s six-year-old mare Battle Maid, by Nassau —Light Action, has been purchased by Mr. W. Matthews, of Sydney, and she was shipped away on Saturday morning. Battle Maid is to race at unregistered meetings adjacent to Sydney. . Teri was schooled by E. Stanway at Randwick last week, but,he gave a very poor display. He refused after jumping the first fence, but afterward scrambled (over three small hurdles. The Ellerslie horseman F. Foster will ■be riding at’the Taranaki Hunt meeting, where his mounts will include Royal Reign in the Hunt Club Cup. Heavy Tracks' at Trentham. Trentham tracks are still heavy, and the trial grass could not be used yesterday morning. The two-year-old track

was opened, and provided fair going, though it was a trifle soft. H. Telford’s pair galloped, the Zany colt finishing well in front, and under a pull, at the end of four furlongs in 55sec. Rulanut and Posy took 54Jsec., and the Pombal— Veil colt, with the Lord Quex—Ayah colt, performed similarly. None of them were after time.

Later in the morning Mrs. Dwan's pair, the. Chief Ruler colt and the Weathervane —Star Dancer gelding, nan 52see. in smart style, the gelding showing considerable improvement on past efforts. '

Fresh Galloping Ground. There was no track open for older horses bar the sand, on which most of them worked. A new bit of ground has been made available, however, by removing the schooling hurdles, and the stretch thus cleared makes three furlongs of very good going. Historic and Granado used this to stretch out on, going down twice at a solid pace. Historic is very well, and Granado has developed into a solid looking customer who might, with his breeding (Limond —Graciosa), be a good class three-year-old. At' Greemneadows.

There are about' eighteen horses in work at the present time at Greenmendows. W. McKinnon (7) and R. Alexander (5) having the largest strings. McKinnon has Curie in fine fettle, and the Arausio—Hymarty three-year-old is well forward. His first run may be in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas. Chrysology had his first /run along . the other morning, doing half a mile comfortably in 51 see. Olide's Brother.

Riri is receiving a lot of attention just now from his owner-trainer, G. Murray Aynsley. The brother to Chide did not show up among the hack sprinters at the Grand National meeting, but he is lik?ly to do much better later on over longer journeys. It is probable that he will be the stable representative for the New Zealand Cup. He has been given every chance to mature, and he may repay his owner’s patience.

Riccarton’s Best Youngster. Some of the Riccarton two-year-olds

that have early engagements are being sprinted regularly (says a southern writer). Quite a few of them are showing speed, but the outstanding one of them all is Pacify, a brown filly by Limond— Makepeace, who will carry Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s livery. Makepeace, who was foaled in 1916, is by Martian—The Hague, by Stepniak. There is a lot of good blood in Pacify, and at present she looks as if she will do her family credit Straightcourse Recovered.

Straightcourse has recovered from the slight mishap which prevented him from racing at the Grand National meeting, and he may be racing at Ashburton, with Owlsflight and Good Catch as his mates. It is probable that this trio will then reak fresh ground, by competing in the following week at Geraldine. This is a meeting which, in the past, has not attracted support from the Chokebore Lodge stable. Still a Hack.

With three wins to his credit, Biddy’s Boy is still eligible to compete in hack company, and will therefore nave another opportunity to contest the Champion Hack Plate at Avondale. ' He. ran second to Valroe in this event last season, but his Dunedin Handicap form shows him to be a vastly-improved galloper, and it will take something above the ordinary to bring about his downfall if started in the event next month. Biddy’s Boy is one of the best of Illumination’s stock racing at the present time, and he promises to develop into a first-class performer this season. Kabikatoa., \ .

Kahikatoa is now enjoying a week in the paddock. After his two victories at Riccarton he will not be seen at the smaller meetings any more. He will be given a race at Hastings, and then Wellington and Riccarton will see him again. In all his races he was galloping on at the right end, so no doubt will be tried in longer distances in future.

A Likely One. Meprisant, a five-year-old by Paladin from Disdainful, is a Riccarton horse whose “future prospects are being freeiy discussed. It is nearly two years since he won the- Dunedin Guineas, and he has

not been successful in the interval, though lie has been placed on several occasions, his record for last season being four seconds and a third in eight starts.. He opened this season with further evidence of consistency, though with no, change of luck, as he was second to Historic in his only start at the Grafid National meeting. His work since then 'has been of an easy character, but he will be' starting soon on more serious tasks. There was a reason for his lapse after winning the Dunedin Guineas, as he had to assist in the task of preparing Chide for the New Zealand Cup, a severe strain on a young horse. Having had a comparatively easy time last season, he may be expected to show his real form this season,'and it will be no surprise if he proves equal to winning in the best handicap company.

Useful Form. Little Wonder showed pace on the flat last season, winning a race at Gisborne and also another at Dannevlrke. She was taken to Ellerslie for the Pakuranga Hunt meeting last Saturday, and ran second to Dominican in the Ladies’ Bracelet. She is engaged in the Hunters’ Flat. Race at the Taranaki Hunt meeting to-morrow, and should again give a good account of herself.

A.J.C. Derby Market. The inclusion- of many other, three-, year-olds in the A.J.C. Derby list has encouraged a little more leniency on the part of the bookmakers with regard to Ammon Ra (says the “Sydney Morning Herald” of Thursday last). On Monday the New Zealander was quoted at an exceptionally short price, considering that the race is several weeks off, and although the present quotation cannot be called lavish, it is nevertheless more enticing. The candidates with a plate on the latest list are:— Ammon Ra. Cypress. Chatham. , Idle Banter. Flying Dave, Illustrious, Johnnie Jason. , - - Movie Star, Old Ming, Starstone, Vice-Royal. . ' . Dermid, High Brae, Heroic Prince. Segovia, Winooka. The Czar.

Handicaps Declared The following handicaps have been declared for the Otago Hunt . Club’s annual meeting, to be held on September s:— SEA VIEW HACK HURDLES, of 85 SOVS.

PHAR LAP’S WIN Williamstown Results Full results from Williamstown on Tuesday show that all doubts about Phar Lap’s recovery from the sickness which caused his temporary retirement from the turf last February were dispelled when the.champion scored a convincing victory in the Underwood Stakes. The race was to have been run last Saturday, but had to be. postponed owing to drenching rain. This was the champion’s twenty-ninth win. and it brought his total stake-win-nings to £52,012. Phar Lap looked big and well. He was ridden by W. Elliott, as his usual rider, J. E. Pike, was not available. The result of the race was in more ways than one a triumph for Phar Lap’s trainer and part-owner, H. R. Telford. Not only did it show that he had succeeded in nursing the champion back to vigorous ..health, but also had the pleasure of running second with his own filly Rondalina. Results:-— UNDERWOOD STAKES. PRETTY POLLY DEAD Famous English Mare The famous - mare Pretty Polly, widely known as the “Queen of the Turf.” died in Ireland this month, at the age of thirty, years. ' ■ , ■ Pretty Polly was by Gallinule from Admiration, by Saraband, and in all her races she carried the colours of her breeder. Major Eustace Loder, who owned another famous horse. Spearmint, about the same period. She had a remarkably successful career on the turf, as she started in twenty-four races and was beaten only twice, her stake earnings being £37,297. As a two-year-old she competed in nine races, and won all of them. Her first outing was in the British Dominion Two-year-old Race, in which she scored by ten lengths, John o’ Gaunt, later a Successful racehorse and sire, being third. Later she took the National Breeders’ Produce Stakes, Mersey Stakes. Champagne Stakes, Breeders’ Foal Plate, Cheveley Park Stakes, Middle Park Plate. Criterion Stakes, and Moulton Stakes. Sheshowed exceptional speed, and won most of her. races without being extended. At three years she won the One Thousand Guineas, Oaks, Coronation Stakes, Nassau Stakes. St. Legcr, Park Hill Stakes, and Free Handicap. This lastnamed event followed a trip to Paris, where Presto II beat- her over a mile and a .half in the Prix du Conseil Municipal. She ran .four times at four years, winning the Coronation Cup, Champion Stakes, Limekiln Stakes, and Jockey Club Cup. As a five-year-old she won the March Stakes and the Coronation Cup, but Bachelor’s Button beat her in the Ascot Gold Cup, with which her .racing career came to an end. During her career at the stud. Pretty Polly produced a number of winners, but nothing approaching her own form, though she is the granddam of Spelthorne. a Successful'- performer, now at the stud in New South Wales. Her eyesight became impaired some time ago, and her teeth were useless; nevertheless, she remained in her paddock, the admiration of all.

MEETING POSTPONED

Masterton Racing Club FINANCES PRECARIOUS Dominion Special Service. Masterton, August 27. At a special meeting of the Masterton Racing Club yesterday, after the club’s financial position had been outlined by the chairman of the' finance committee, Mr. A. G. Lawson, it was decided not to hold a meeting in October, and to cancel, if considered advisable, the club’s autumn meeting. The club is to’be carried on, and in order to enable this to be done members are to be requested to nay their subscriptions within fourteen days. Reviewing, the club’s finances Mr. Lawson kaid that there was a mortgage of £3OOO, outstanding debts amounting to £625, and an overdraft of £1490. The present guarantors'of the overdraft had said that they were'not. prepared to incur further liability, which meant'that the club’s finances at the. bank'were stopped. The question then was whether the club should be wound up or carried on. The former course was an unwise one at the present time. If the. club’s 240 members were to pay their subscription this year to the amount of £2, the club would be enabled to carry on. The October meeting would have to be cancelled, and, if necessary, the autumn meeting.
