SPORTS IN THE SNOW

Alpinists at Chateau NEW ZEALAND TOURNEY Dominion Special Service. The Chateau, Tongariro, August 25. Alpinists from all parts of the Dominion are gathered at The Chateau Tongariro, National Park, where the Dominion winter sports tournament is being held. In all there are 350 guests in residence for the sports, an easy record for New Zealand. Parties include 80 members of the Ruapehu Ski Club, 27 members of the Alpine Sports Club, 37 members of the Auckland University Field Club, 20 members of the Victoria College Tramping Club, and 37 members of the Tararua, Hutt Valley, and Wairarapa Tramping Clubs. The tournament, which is organised by th? Ruapehu Ski Club, will, weather permitting, open on Wednesday, and will be continued on Thursday and Friday. Snow is plentiful, and indications point to a successful meeting. There are three events, one to be decided on Wednesday, the men’s langlauf or cross-country race, which will be run over a five to seven-mile course; the womeii’s langlauf, and the Ruapehu Ski Club’s men’s langlauf. The first two events are open, and carry a New Zealand championship. The men’s langlauf also carries points toward the title of New Zealand champion skier, which is decided on an aggregate of points for this event, and the downhill and slalom championships.
