SPARE THE TREES
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —By reason of certain verbal omissions “The Dominion’s” report this morning of the deputation which waited upon the Eastbourne Borough. Council last night respecting the trees in Rona Street conveys the impression that the deputation made its representations on grounds that had no existence in fact in short, that it was barking up the wrong tree. My opening remarks are correctly reported, as follows : —“The chief speaker was Mr. J. W. Heenan, who said the deputation Understood that Mr. Russo had been given permission by the council to cut down a line of ngaio trees m Bona Street. The reason Mr. Russo had given for wanting to cut the trees was that they kept out the light to his house, and also caused dampness.” His Worship is correctly reported as replying“ Most of you have got the wrong idea. We have had no request to cut down trees because they shade the light. The request is because Mr. Russo wishes to subdivide, and the trees are in the way of giving access to the sections. I have an open wind on the subject, but something will have to be done to give access or we will block progress in the ba Sut the report makes no mention of my having challenged his Worships statement and of his candid admission (after reading Mr. Russo’s letter and the council minutes) that'my statement was dorrect both as to the grounds of Mr- Russos application and the nature of the permission granted to him.-I am. Eastbourne, August 21.
A lecture will be given in Petone on Monday night, under the auspices of the Salvation Army, on “Slum Life in London.
