New Zealand’s Bowling Takes Swift Toll MATCH WITH NORFOLK By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Rec. August 22, 1.30 a.m.) London, August 21. The New Zealand cricketers commenced their match against Norfolk yesterday in fine weather. The wicket was easy and a strong wind assisted the bowlers. Dempster and Talbot added 86 for the fifth wicket, the former, despite the lack of match practice, maintaining a magnificent defence. He was also quick to score off any loose deliveries, particularly on the leg side. He appeared to be set for another century when he was bowled off his pads. His innings lasted 190 ■minutes and he hit seven 4’s. Talbot batted steadily until he was caught by the wicketkeeper. Matheson played a forcing game and was occa--sionally lucky, but his innings was highly valuable. . "■ The bowling never appeared dangerous, although the wind enabled Eagle and Rought-Rought to swing the ball. The weather in the afternoon turned wintry. ■< Norfolk batted for 45 minutes and had lost one wicket for 24 runs when stumps were drawn. Matheson, who wore his sweater while bowling, dismissed Falcon with a ball that left the pitch like lightning. Stumps were drawn half an hour early owing to rain. To-day the match was continued in dull weather. Merritt routed the Home team,' Walker being the only batsman to play with confidence. Details: — ; NEW ZEALAND. First Innings. Dempster, b. R.
