N.Z. TRADE-MARK
Locally-Manufactured Goods QUESTION OF DESIGN The problem of finding a New Zealand trade mark design which will be acceptable to manufacturers generally throughout New Zealand is one which Is still exercising the ’minds of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation. The Canterbury Association has spent a great amount of time during the past year in conducting a national competition, selecting designs and making awards, and finally submitted to the New Zealand Federation yesterday a design based on the tjireo successful ones In the competition. This was ta the form of the letters “N.Z.” crossed ta a diamond-filigree design.' It was pointed out that the design would be difficult, If not impossible, to reproduce on a small scale if used'on material, owing to the delicate figuring in the diamond border. ’• The question of getting a clause included in the Washing-Up Bill in Parliament enabling the federation to register a design was discussed, but it was stated that unless the federation had a design which it proposed to adopt it was unlikely that the clause would go through. Canterbury delegates urged that the design submitted should bo adopted, as considerable time had beep devoted to the matter, and it was urgent that manufacturers should have a registered trade mark which could be used for all goods manufactured ta New Zealand. It was contended that those obtaining a permit could make use of any wording round the design so long as the article sold under the design was of first-class manufacture and complied with the requirements of the federation.
The majority of delegates were not In favour of accepting the design submitted, and •it was decided to leave the matter ta the hands of the new executive to press forward to finality as soon as possible.
Mr. J. Abel promised that a Wellington committee would go into the question immediately with a view to seeing if a suitable design could be modelled on some of those submitted ta the competition. If it found something suitable it should be submitted to the executive and the respective associations for approval. This course was adopted.
